(Description)
David Shire
David ShirePhD Candidate
David Shire is a PhD candidate in the Kustka Lab. His research focuses on the adaptations that allow marine phytoplankton to survive under the unique environmental constraints of the open ocean. David’s dissertation project explores the molecular mechanisms by which an abundant and widely distributed phytoplankton (Emiliania huxleyi) can supplement its demand for zinc with alternate trace metals. His favorite piece of lab equipment is the iCE 3300 Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometer.
Robert Bornhorst
Robert BornhorstPhD Candidate
Robert joined the lab in 2016 after completing his undergraduate degree in Bioinformatics & Molecular biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has been leading our Molecular Biology efforts to investigate iron uptake mechanisms in algae, and is interested in applying computational tools and big data approaches to the field of algal physiology.
Josephine Arewa
Josephine ArewaUndergraduate Researcher
Josephine was first introduced to the lab during our MENISCUS program. Now going into her Junior year at Boston University, pursuing a BS in Chemistry, she spends her summers and winter break working with us. She’s been involved in a number of projects, and is leading an effort to quantify the best methods for cryopreservation of marine algae.
